“CHADAR” as it is famously called is nothing but the Zanskar river transforming itself from a rapid river to a white blanket of ice during winter! A frozen spectacle, The Chadar comprises of glass ice ranging from a bluish tinge to golden yellow that is seen during the few hours that sunlight reaches directly into the gorge to the milky whitish on a moonlit night – as said a trek journey like no other!

Detailed Itinerary:

 

10 days / 9 nights

 

Day 1: Report to GH in Leh & Rest

 

Arrive in Leh and proceed to our simple GH. Use the Day to just rest and acclimatize.

Complete the paperwork and keep it ready for ALTOA Permits + Wildlife Fees + Insurance

 

Documents required:- 

 

1. ID Proof photocopy (Original + 2nos Photocopy)

2. Address Proof Photocopy (Same as Above)

3. Medical/Fitness Certificate from Family Doctor for High Altitude Trek (Same as Above)

4. 2 Photographs 

5. Original Boarding Pass (DEL - IXL)

 

 

Day 2: Market & Shopping Day

 

Use this day to head to the market to shop for items like Gum Boots, Wool Headgear etc . 

Half Day Sightseeing around Leh town can be arranged at an extra cost or one can flag down a local taxi and take off on a short excursion.

 

 

Day 3: Medical Test & Paperwork day

 

Head for medical check in the morning - one can only get a Go Ahead for the trek if cleared by the Local Doctors.

 

Parameters Checked:-

1. Height + Weight + Pulse

2. Blood Pressure (Up to 130/85)

3. Blood Oxygen Concentration using Finger tip pulse Oxymeter (Needs to be over 90%)

4. Breathing for any abnormality using stethoscope

 

Finish Medical test & insurance formalities by Lunch time & proceed back to GH to rest and pack for the trek

 

Important Notes:-

 

1. Standard procedure is to report 3 days prior to the start of the trek - we highly recommend coming in at least 4/5 days early so that acclimatization can be proper and we can also rule out the probability of any altitude related medical issue within first 4/5 days

2. Stay arrangements for the early arrivals can be made in the same GH at an extra cost

3. Extra stay also permits one to test gear and make last minute purchases if necessary

 

 

Day 4:- Trek Day 1 - Leh to Upper Shingra

 

Load luggage & take the 3/4hr road journey to the trekking start point. 

Our first walk on the Frozen river starts on this day. Enjoy the landscapes & the first time experience of walking on slippery ice.

Hike on the Chadar - Approx 3km & 3/4hrs

Accommodation:- Tent + Mat + Sleeping Bag

Note:- Lunch on this day would be late

 

 

Day 5:- Trek Day 2 - Upper Shingra to Tibb Cave

 

Start post breakfast and embark on the exciting journey towards Tibb Cave - Stop to listen to the interesting local folklore and myths associated with different locations on today's hike by our Affable Zanskari Guide 'Tsultim Gyatso'.

Enjoy the sight of multiple frozen waterfalls along the route as you amble + slide along to our destination for the day

 

Hike on the Chadar - Approx 13km & 6 to 8hrs

Accommodation:- Tent + Mat + Sleeping Bag

Note:- Hot Lunch would be served enroute 

 

 

Day 6:- Trek Day 3 - Tibb Cave to Neyrak village

 

Start early from Tibb cave for an adventurous hike along one of the most fragile parts of the Chadar - Stop & listen to more stories and fun facts about this section of the Chadar.

Enjoy time at the Frozen Waterfall that is always the Highlight picture of the trek to hearts content before proceeding ahead to the village.

 

Hike on the Chadar - Approx 12km & 6 to 8hrs

Accommodation:- Tent + Mat + Sleeping Bag (In case mud house is not available)

Notes:-

1. Hot Lunch would be served enroute

2. We will try for accommodation in local mud house with a central wood fired bukhari (Heating) - Availability of the mud house is on first come first served basis - This will be complimentary from CNC.

 

 

Day 7:- Trek Day 4 - Neyrak to Tibb Cave/Tsomo 

 

Wake up to an early breakfast & proceed towards the Frozen Waterfall again for one last look. Amble back towards Tibb Cave or Tsomo which is a little ahead of Tibb cave and take in the ever changing nature of the Chadar - the route we took the previous day may have changed overnight!

 

Hike on the Chadar - Approx 12 to 17km & 6 to 8hrs

Accommodation:- Tent + Mat + Sleeping Bag

Notes:-

1. Hot Lunch would be served enroute

2. With 2 days experience of hiking the Chadar - it is now possible to cover more distance in lesser amount of time than Day 1/2

 

Day 8:- Trek Day 5 - Tibb Cave/Tsomo to Upper Shingra/Lower Shingra

 

Retrace back to our start point keeping in mind that maybe the route may have changed due to the unpredictable dynamics of the Frozen River. Stop to enjoy a few ice slides along the route to make the otherwise monotonous journey Interesting!

Reach Shingra Campsite and celebrate the completion of the Chadar Experience - Enjoy Local Song & Dance with our Zanskari Team before calling it a night!

Hike on the Chadar - Approx 12 to 17km & 6 to 8hrs

Accommodation:- Tent + Mat + Sleeping Bag

Notes:-

1. Hot Lunch would be served enroute

2. With 2 days experience of hiking the Chadar - it is now possible to cover more distance in lesser amount of time than Day 1/2

3. Though it is possible to exit back to Leh on this day, we prefer to stay back on the Chadar to avoid the treacherous offroad journey back to Leh in the Dark!

4. So make the most of the last night - take in the view of the stars if the sky is clear and generally make merry.

 

Day 9:- Back to Leh

 

Wake up to our last breakfast on the trek & head out to the nearest roadhead after a quote of thanks to our staff!

Reach back to Leh by afternoon - Freshen up & pack for the return journey home the next day.

 

Day 10:- To Airport & Out

 

Leave for airport atleast 3hrs before flight time as per booking.

Notes:

 

Direct flights to Leh are available only from Delhi and the same usually take off very early in the morning. Guests flying to Leh will need to fly in to Delhi on the previous night and take the early morning DEL-IXL flight.

Between 29 - 15 days: 85% of the Trip Cost

Less than 15 days from date of departure: 100% of the Trip Cost
